Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, and is today a large city with about 500,000 people.  Many people visit Cusco every year because of the numerous Inca and colonial buildings and other attractions in the city.  People also pass through Cusco on the way to Machu Picchu. There is much to see in the Cusco area.

The area that is in the city of Cusco was inhabited by pre-Inca peoples for many years, and during Inca times it was the capital of the empire.  According to Inca legend, the city was founded in the 12th century by the first Inca named Manco Capac, who was said to be the son of the sun.

During Inca times the city was shaped like a puma.  After the arrival of the Spanish, the city was changed and some Inca sites destroyed.  Many Spanish-style buildings were built. Today there are both Inca and Spanish style buildings.

There are many places to see like:

  • Sacsayhuaman, an Inca fortress, this was the head of the puma when the city had this shape.
  • The Cathedral, built in the historic center of the city, it is one of the colonial style buildings.
  • Plaza de Armas, the historic center of Cusco. This square existed in Inca times, and was changed after the arrival of the Spanish.
  • The markets, Cusco has many traditional markets, and it is possible to buy handicrafts or local foods in these markets.
