There are a few things that you should have when you go on the Inca Trail, some are more important than others, but try to bring as many of the things below as you can.

One of the things that you need for the Inca Trail is a passport.  You need this to book trail tickets, and without one you cannot get tickets for the trail.  It should use the same one that you use to enter the country.

It is a good idea to bring a t-shirt, since there are hot sunny days. But if you have sensitive skin, it would be good to use a light colored long sleeve shirt.

It is also a good idea to bring a jacket, and rain poncho, since it often rains (umbrellas are not recommended since you will need your hands free).

Sunscreen is also a good idea. Your backpack should preferably have a strap for a sleeping bag, and be big enough to carry your extra clothes, water, or other things you bring, but not too heavy, since you will be carrying it while you walk.

You should bring a towel (a small one) as well. During the first 2 nights of the trail, there are only cold showers, but hot showers are available on the 3rd day. Hikers are charged to use the hot shower.

Make sure that you have a good sleeping bag. The sleeping bag should be for temperatures as low as -10 Celsius, since the Inca Trail often gets very cold at night.

It is a good idea to bring a personal medical kit. One of the most common problems on the Inca Trail is altitude sickness, so your kit can include medicine for altitude sickness. It is also a good idea to bring medicine for stomach problems. Blisters also occur on the trail, so bandages are recommended.

You will also need to bring soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and toilet paper. Insect repellent is recommended.

A headlamp is recommended over a flashlight, since you may need your hands to help you walk or climb, or to take pictures.

Last but not least, you will need money, and should have Soles in smaller denominations. You will be able to buy water on the trail, and will need money for meals that are not included on the Inca Trail package.

Also, you will meet your porters and cooks on the last day, and tips are voluntary, but are greatly appreciated.  Do not bring any more than what you need for the trail, since it will be difficult to carry while you are walking.
