July 7th 2017 marked the 10th anniversary of Machu Picchu being included as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World! In a joyful ceremony held in Lisboa and hosted by Hillary Swank, the Inca citadel obtained one more international recognition.

Machu Picchu had already been declared World Cultural Heritage in 1983 by the Unesco, but on the Wonders of the Modern World event one more distinction was conferred to the beautiful, plenty of history Inca citadel built on a mountain top. Machu Picchu as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World was the result of a democratic process, popular voting around the world, with millions of participants. This tells us that Machu Picchu is a touristic destination as famous as the Pyramids in Giza or the Eiffel tower, because travelers worldwide have been gradually building a great reputation for the Inca citadel, which offers visitors so many things: amazing natural beauty, a clean, healthy getaway, the powerful, reinvigorating energy of Andean nature, history and wonderful architecture, a great adventure that has become renowned worldwide, and has become one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, on its 10th anniversary this year.

The ceremony was broadcast to more than 170 countries, and Machu Picchu joined the league of the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World, which includes the Chichen Itza Maya citadel in Mexico and the Great Chinese Wall. Of course this award prompted a great celebration in Cusco and all over Peru, which was remembered now on the 10th anniversary; government officials were in Lisboa to receive the award and share this achievement with our country, showing that Cusco is a top touristic destination, with 5-star, international standards of travel and tour services.

One of the powerful messages Machu Picchu’s election as one of the Wonders of the World sent -and still so important on this 10th anniversary- was the respect and care the Incas had for nature, for the Mother Earth or Pachamama, the Quechua word for it; the Incas had a deep ecological standpoint, for they saw nature as the provider of everything, and thus it had to be revered and preserved. Machu Picchu was built in such a way that it didn’t destroy or damaged nature, to the contrary, the citadel is carefully adapted to its natural environment, not changing the ecological structure and dynamics of the place at all. When in Machu Picchu, visitors marvel at how skillfully integrated nature and construction are; for example, you will find free llamas eating leaves there. All people interested in ecology and also researchers, will have a major experience at the Inca citadel and all along the Cusco region. To this day, on the 10th anniversary of Machu Picchu’s prize, the sounds of nature and the singing of the birds still can be heard at times everyday at the Inca citadel.

This member of the Wonders of the Modern World is a place of intense serenity and spirituality, originally thought as one actually, it was the retreat where Inca royalty and leaders came from Cusco city to rest from daily cares, absorb the energy of nature and it is said that they performed mystical ceremonies there, after which they took all the important decisions concerning the control and development of the empire. No wonder when the Spanish invaders arrived, they were so surprised there was no poverty at all and the whole empire was efficiently organized by very competent government planners. No doubt the Incas had achieved a very high spiritual level, which, regretfully, kind of was in decline at the time of the Spanish invasion. To this day, people from Peru and all over the world follow this tradition of coming to Cusco in order to have a break from the demands of quotidian life.
