Overview of your Inti Raymi 1-day Tour

The Incas, like many other indigenous peoples around the world,  worshiped the sun, and every 24th of June they held the “Inti Raymi”, which means “sun party” in Quechua. It starts at the temple of the sun, and goes to the main square.  It finishes at Sacsayhuamán. Sacrifices were made during the event. This was done in Inca Times but ended after the empire collapsed. Some people in Cuzco started it again in the 1940’s. It is now held every year on the 24th of June. this tour can be combined with any of our tours of Machu Picchu, or in other parts of Cuzco or Peru.

Inti Raymi – The Sun Party – Tour on June 24th, 2017

We will pick you up from your hotel to take you to Koricancha (Temple of the Sun) where the ceremony will start. Suddenly you will listen to the steps of the traditional dance of each of the four armies of the Inca Empire. They will gather in front of the temple in a beautiful coreography. The Inca nobility, priests, the Inca Emperor and Empress will also join the ceremony. The Inca Emperor will open the ceremony with a chant in quechua, language of the Incas, and everybody will go to the next stage, the Main Square.

Once in the Main Square, the sound of a pututo (conch-horn blower) will reopen the ceremony. The Inca Emperor will perform the ritual of the coca leaf to show gratitude and receive the blessing from the god Sun. Moreover, the current governor of the city will meet the Inca Emperor to listen to advices for good government. This is known as the Meeting of two Times.

Finally, the main part of the ceremony will take place at the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. The dancers will perform a beautiful entrance making different shapes ending in the mystical shape of the Andean cross. Following, you will see the performance of the three mystical rituals: the chicha (traditional beberage), fire and lama ceremonies. The chicha is offered as a present for the god sun, the fire symbolizes the promess of the god sun to protect the pepole and finally the lama entrails are used to predict the future of the Empire.

The tour ends at about 15:30 with transfer back to your hotel.
