Anyone planning to see Machu Picchu will almost certainly stop in Cuzco for at least some time. Some of the best places you shouldn’t miss while here are:

cusco plaza de armasThe Plaza de Armas. The Plaza in Cuzco includes old building from colonial times, as well as modern stores and restaurants. Many of the modern buildings in the plaza have walls that blend in with the rest of the historical plaza.

The Cathedral. It costs 20 soles for admission to the cathedral, but near the huge wooden doors of the main entrance is a little stone obelisk that is said to be the embodiment of the male god “Wiracocha”. It is the only part of the Inca religious site not destroyed by the Spanish.

San Pedro MarketMercado de San Pedro. This is a market located near the Plaza de Armas where local residents go to buy fruits, vegetables, meat, nuts, and other items. It is interesting to see for most people, and you can buy handicrafts here as well.

Qoricancha Temple and Santo Domingo Convent. Also known as the Temple of the Sun, this was the most important temple in Inca times. There are many paintings inside.
