During the month of April 2017, visitors will not be able to climb the mountains of Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu. Each one will be closed for 15 days, Huayna Picchu for the first 15 days and Machu Picchu for the second 15 days. The reason for the closing of both mountains during the month of April 2017 is for maintenance of things like platforms and walls.
This does not mean that Machu Picchu (the World Wonder) is closing, the only thing that will change is that visitors will not be able to go up the mountains of Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu during this time. So if you want to visit Machu Picchu during the month of April in 2017 you still can.
The mountains of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu are the two mountains that overlook the site of Machu Picchu. You often see these two mountain in pictures of Machu Picchu.
This is not the first time that maintenance work has taken place but it is the first time that the mountains have closed to do it.
Also, like every year the Inca Trail will be closed in February of 2017, also for maintenance reasons and because of the heavy rains. The closing of the Inca Trail does not affect visits to Machu Picchu.
You still need to reserve your entrance for Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail in advance since there are a limited number of entrances available, refer to the link to see when there are available entrances.
