Inti Raymi in 2018 – The Sun Festival
On June 24th (in our current calendar), the Incas knew that the Sun was at its closest to the Southern hemisphere. And since the Sun was the main god of the people, the Inca leaders declared the occasion holy and conducted an elaborated ritual of worshipping, which also congregated a multitude, in today’s Cusco’s Main Square (Plaza de Armas).
The Inca emperor, surrounded by the priests and the court, honored the Sun god in several ways and then asked for a very successful year (it marked the first day of their lunar calendar) in every way, particularly for agriculture, the main economic resource of the empire. There were religious rituals, dance, music, typical food and beverages, it was the most important celebration for them.
Nowadays, the whole ceremony is recreated, in three wonderful spots in Cusco City: the Koricancha temple, our Main Square and finally Sacsayhuaman fortress. Professional, experienced actors play the Inca emperor, his courtiers, nobility and priests, also their military and regional leaders. Includes typical music, costumes, dances, religious rituals, truly bringing back the full atmosphere and grandeur of the ancient days.
