The daily number of available permits for the Classic Inca Trail is 500. May is one of the most popular months for this hike and also the starting point of the high season. Can I do the Inca Trail or get to Machu Picchu in May then?
Yes. Even if May permits for the 4-day-hike are sold out, you can still do the hike to Machu Picchu via the Short Inca Trail. This trek is a short version of the classic one. It takes 2 days; the first one is a short hike from Chachabamba ruins to Aguas Calientes town next to the Inca citadel, then the second day you will have the guided tour through Machu Picchu ruins. You will get the chance to see Machu Picchu twice.
The Short Inca Trail Permits are sold not as fast as the Classic Inca Trail Permits, but we strongly recommend to book them in advance as they are 250 daily permits for the 2 day Short Inca Trail.

You can change the date of your trip. You can choose hiking the Inca Trail in April or earlier. Hiking the Inca Trail in July will ensure good weather as July is the middle of the dry season. October or December are good options too as they are the starting point of the low season.
Remember that you cannot hike the Inca Trail in February due to maintenance works.
